Since 2000, we've been supporting people across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Torbay to live more independently, confidently and on their own terms.
Thousands of individuals, families and professionals have turned to SiLS for support that feels human, respectful and genuinely helpful, especially when life feels overwhelming and an extra helping hand really matters. Put simply, we're here to make life better.
Where it all began
SiLS was founded by Peter and Barbara Kimber long before “supported living” became widely recognised. In fact, back in 2000, it didn't really exist.
At the time, they were running a supported housing organisation for people with learning difficulties. While working there, they met two residents who were clear about what they wanted: not shared accommodation, but homes of their own. They wanted to live independently, to have a real place in their community.
Peter and Barbara listened and supported both individuals to move into their own homes in South Gloucestershire, with tailored, hands‑on support built around their needs. The results were powerful and eye‑opening.
It became clear there was a gap in the support sector. There were very few organisations focused on helping people move out of residential care and into their own place, with flexible support shaped by real needs. That realisation sparked an idea and SiLS was born.
From the beginning, we have believed in personalised, community‑based support that helps people live independently and on their own terms, a principle that still shapes our work today.
Growing alongside the people we support
A lot has changed over the past 26 years in society, services and people's lives. What hasn't changed is our focus on putting people first.
As needs and challenges have evolved, so has our support. From help with benefits and budgeting, to mental health recovery, rebuilding routines, or taking steps towards work, education or a home of their own, our approach has always been practical, flexible and personal.
Today, we provide personalised outreach support for adults aged 18+, including people with learning difficulties, mental health needs, physical disabilities, autism and ADHD, always shaped around the individual, never a one-size-fits-all approach.
