The Referral Process

The referral process is how SILS deals with applicants

Referral
This is usually carried out by the agency that knows the applicant best. Phone contact is normally made and a referral meeting is arranged where we complete the application form and needs assessment. Stakeholders are welcome to attend.

Information about the applicant’s needs
This information is provided by relevant professionals, and especially by the applicant themselves. Care plans and other assessments are often requested.

Processing the Application
When the needs assessment and application form is complete, we decide if the applicant is eligible for our service. We do this by using our ‘selection and allocation policy’ and by using the information we have collected to make a decision. We also talk with staff at ‘support team’ meetings. We try to make a decision within 3 working days and let the applicant know shortly afterwards.

Eligibility
Our ‘selection and allocation policy’ has a complete list of the eligibility criteria. Examples are; over 18 years, assessed as having a severe and continuing mental illness or a learning disability / difficulty, a need for and a clear willingness to accept our support.

Waiting List
Places are offered to applicants in order of priority. SILS ‘selection and allocation policy’ gives details of who will be a priority.

Appeals
Appeals are offered to unsuccessful applicants within a reasonable time frame. Appeals are considered by the line manager of the initial decision maker.

Signposting
Advice will be given on getting other more appropriate services if the applicant is unsuccessful.
